Encrypted Command Links: Why Your Drone's Radio Connection Needs Protecting

The link between a pilot and a drone is a radio connection like any other - and radio connections can be intercepted or interfered with. Here's what command-link security actually involves.

Overview

Every drone flight depends on a live radio link between the pilot's controller and the aircraft - the command and control (C2) link that carries stick inputs one way and telemetry the other. It's easy to take this link for granted, but it's a wireless connection like any other, and wireless connections can be listened to, recorded, or in rarer cases interfered with.

What The Command Link Actually Carries

Beyond flight controls, the C2 link typically carries live telemetry - GPS position, battery status, altitude - and on many aircraft, a live video downlink. None of that is meant for public consumption, particularly when a flight is over a client's property or a sensitive site.

  • Flight commands - throttle, direction, return-to-home triggers.
  • Telemetry - position, altitude, battery, signal strength.
  • Video downlink - a live first-person view of whatever the aircraft is filming.

What Good Link Security Looks Like

Most reputable commercial drone platforms now encrypt the C2 link by default, but not all consumer-grade equipment does, and older firmware can lag behind. Treating link security as a checklist item rather than an assumption is the safer approach for any operator flying commercially.

  • Confirm the platform encrypts both the control link and the video downlink, not just one.
  • Keep firmware current - link security fixes are a common reason for manufacturer updates.
  • Avoid flying safety-critical or client-sensitive jobs on hobbyist gear with no documented link security.

An unencrypted video downlink isn't just a privacy problem for us - it's a privacy problem for the property and the client we're flying over.
