Every RPAS operator flies inside airspace that is shared with manned aircraft, other drones, and people on the ground. Geofencing is one of the main technical safeguards built into modern drones to help keep that airspace safe - a software-enforced virtual boundary around locations like airports, defence sites, and correctional facilities, where a drone simply isn't permitted to fly.
How Geofencing Actually Works
Most commercial drones ship with a built-in database of restricted zones, tied to GPS position. When the drone approaches one of these zones, the flight controller can warn the pilot, refuse to take off, or in some cases prevent the aircraft from crossing the boundary at all. Manufacturers update these databases periodically as airspace rules change.
- Permanent no-fly zones - airports, military bases, prisons.
- Altitude-restricted zones - areas where flight is allowed, but only below a set ceiling.
- Temporary restrictions - bushfire response areas, major events, VIP movements.
Why Geofencing Isn't the Whole Story
