Overview

A drone in flight is quietly relying on two signal types staying intact: GPS for positioning, and a radio link for control and telemetry. Both can be disrupted - sometimes deliberately, sometimes as unintentional interference - and a professional operator plans for that possibility rather than assuming it away.

GPS Spoofing Explained

GPS spoofing feeds a receiver fake satellite signals, tricking it into calculating a false position. For a drone, that can mean the aircraft believes it's somewhere it isn't - drifting toward restricted airspace it thinks it's avoiding, or a return-to-home function aiming at the wrong coordinates entirely.

Signal Jamming and Link Loss

Jamming interferes with the control frequency itself rather than GPS. A well-configured aircraft has a defined failsafe behaviour for loss of control link - typically hovering in place, initiating return-to-home, or landing immediately - and knowing which behaviour is configured, and why, is part of a proper pre-flight briefing.

How We Prepare For It

  • Checking the RF environment of a site before flying, where relevant.
  • Confirming failsafe behaviour is configured appropriately for the job.
  • Maintaining visual line of sight so a link issue is caught immediately, not discovered later.
  • Extra caution near known higher-interference sites, such as correctional or defence facilities.
